HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Doctors at Huntsville Pediatrics Associates said it's almost stomach bug season. They said the number of cases of the ailment rise durring the fall and winter months. There are ways to protect yourself and your children.

The first tip doctors gave is to practice good hand washing habits. The virus spreads from hand to hand, and enters the body when you eat with your hands.

There are several symptoms to look out for.

"Usually what you'll see is vomiting; that starts pretty abruptly and you'll have [it] for a day or two. Then you'll see that go away and you'll start to develop some diarrhea or loose stool," said Dr. Sarah Pettigrow.

Doctors advised to keep a child with the stomach bug hydrated with clear fluids, even if vomiting persists.
