FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

Drivers in the Shoals will have to take an alternate route around Hermitage Drive in Florence for the next eight months beginning Monday as work begins to repair a bridge.

Construction crews already have signs and barricades ready to go for Monday morning. The stretch of road is on Hermitage Dr. near Atlanta Avenue and Railroad Avenue.

City officials said they are glad the funding came through to make the necessary repairs now, in hopes of preventing what could become a road hazard for drivers.

"It's going to be somewhat inconvenient, but it's at a point before it becomes a danger and has to be shut down. Fortunately we are getting funding, and it's time to get the bridge replaced," said city spokesman Phil Stevenson.

The eight month estimate assumes no delays caused by inclement weather.
