Self Defense: Learn to stay safe for free

CUYAHOGA COUNTY, OH (WOIO) -

Cuyahoga County officials want you to be able to defend yourself in case you are ever attacked.

Thursday night a series of self defense classes kicked off.

"I thought this would be good for me and my daughter since we travel together a lot without male company," said Michelle Ashford.

Michelle Ashford and her daughter are attending one self defense class.

It was organized by the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's office and the NAACP after a series of attacks of the city's east side and serial killings in East Cleveland.

The instructors there say protecting yourself is not just a physical thing.

"Mental empowerment. The way your mind navigates tour body. If your mind freezes up, you're not going to be able to do anything with your body," said Cuyahoga Co. Deputy Sheriff Joe Skovira.

And the women are learning.

"The cantaloupe technique. If someone is trying to attack you, automatically how you press on the cantaloupe, to press somebody's eyes if your attacker puts his hands on your throat. That was a good technique. I didn't know that," said Micah Walker.

The self-defense classes will continue in Cleveland, Warrensville Heights and Parma in the coming weeks.

David: Showers and storms ongoing across the Valley

    Saturday, March 25 2017 5:50 PM EDT2017-03-25 21:50:37 GMT

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
