NEW HOPE, AL (WAFF) -

New Hope students who were on a trip to Washington DC Thursday are accounted for and safe.

Thursday, a woman was shot on Capitol Hill after police said she attempted to ram a gate at the White House.

Geraldine Tibbs with Madison County Schools said all parents who did not go on the trip with their children were notified of the situation.

Sandra Thomas is one parent who was on the trip. She said the group was at the Capitol before 11 a.m. She said Rep. Mo Brooks gave a speech before they broke for lunch. On the way back, they saw police responding to the area.

"We just turned around and left the area," said Thomas. "We felt that was the safest thing to do."
