FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

The U.S. Army has reported that after a comprehensive review of Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) programs across the nation, they have approved the closure of thirteen ROTC programs, including the one at the University of North Alabama.

These closures will take place over a two-year period, concluding at the end of the 2014-2015 academic year.

Karl F. Schneider, acting assistant secretary of the Army for Manpower and Reserve Affairs, said, "The decision to close the thirteen ROTC programs is not a reflection on the quality of those academic institutions or the outstanding officers produced at those schools." Schneider claimed that these closures were necessary in order to make efficient use of resources and to maintain a presence in every state.

Key variables considered in the review included total enrollment and number of lieutenants commissioned annually. Shifting demographics also affected where the Army would look to recruit and develop future leaders.

The U.S. Army will assist all who are currently enrolled in these programs.
