If shutdown continues, private company will furlough

Posted: Updated:
HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

More people may be furloughed because of the government shutdown. This time, it could come from private companies, including one with offices in Alabama.

United Technologies Corporation is a defense manufacturing company. The company said it may have to furlough 2,000 employees come Monday, Oct. 7. The company said their Sikorsky Aircraft division, which makes Black Hawk helicopters, would feel the impact first. Sikorsky has offices in Alabama, Florida, and Connecticut. Sikorsky's Systems and Technology Integration Center is located in Cummings Research Park in Huntsville.

The company said they will be forced to do this because Defense Contract Management Agency inspectors were furloughed. They're the ones who audit and approve operations throughout the manufacturing process for military products.

UTC also said that if the shutdown continues through next week, they would have to furlough workers in their Pratt & Whitney and UTC Aerospace Systems units. That would double company wide furloughs to 4,000. Both units have offices in Huntsville and Madison.
