DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

Decatur police tracked down and charged a man in connection with a violent robbery at a pharmacy.

Officers arrested Jason Richard McWhorter, 26, on Wednesday, two days after the robbery.

Police received a call about a robbery at the Medicine Shoppe on Danville Road around 5:25 p.m. on Monday. Officers reported that while on the scene, they discovered that McWhorter entered the pharmacy dressed all in black and armed with a semiautomatic handgun. Police said McWhorter jumped over the counter, demanded narcotics and assaulted John McGwire, the pharmacist.

Authorities said that during the assault, McWhorter hit McGwire multiple times on the head, but the pharmacist was able to remove the assailant's shirt and mask, revealing McWhorter's face to the security camera. Officers said McWhorter then fled the scene in a burgundy Dodge Dakota.

Police said the public were able to help Detective Burleson identify McWhorter as the offender on Tuesday, after the surveillance images were shown on the media and local news stations. Police arrested and charged McWhorter with pharmacy robbery and second degree assault on Wednesday.

McWhorter is currently being held in the Morgan County Jail on a $60,000 bond.
