FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama women's basketball team will play 13 home games during the upcoming 2013-14 campaign. New head coach Missy Tiber has released the schedule for the upcoming season, featuring five games against teams advancing to post-season play and an exhibition contest against Southeastern Conference member Vanderbilt.
"Our schedule is extremely challenging," said Tiber. "Our goal is to compete at a high level in February and March, and I believe we will be well prepared by playing many quality opponents. It's also very beneficial with a relatively young team and a new coach to have the opportunity to play your first two games in Flowers Hall."
The Lions will play Vanderbilt on Nov. 2 in Nashville before opening the regular season against Tennessee Temple on Nov. 12 at Flowers Hall. UNA will play a total of six non-conference games prior to the start of GSC play, including a pair of games Nov. 22-23 at the Clark Atlanta Classic. The Lions will face SIAC foes Miles and host Clark Atlanta, which advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season.
Gulf South Conference play begins on Dec. 14 at Union. The home-and-home series against the rest of the GSC slate features the addition of NAIA power Lee University. The Flames finished the 2012-13 season with a 34-3 record that ended with a 71-65 loss in the NAIA national championship game. Although, Lee is a provisional member of the GSC, games against the Flames will count in the conference standings, as will games against second-year provisional members Shorter and Union.
The 2014 Gulf South Conference Basketball Tournament is set for March 6-9 at the Pete Hanna Center on the campus of Samford University in Birmingham.
