FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

No solution was found Wednesday to prevent Florence's Handy Head Start program from closing its doors. As a result, 42 employees will be terminated and 281 students will be without a program to attend, effective Oct. 11.

At an emotional meeting Wednesday, tears were shed as stories were shared about the Head Start program and how it has changed lives. Employees, parents and other community members gathered to discuss the closure of the Handy Head Start Program.

Superintendent Dr. Janet Womack said closing the Head Start program is not in the best interest of the community, the students or the staff. Without federal funding, however, she said there is no choice but to close the doors.
