Drug charges dropped after key witness dies

Posted: Updated:
MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Drug trafficking charges against a Marshall County man have been dismissed after a key witness in the case connecting the defendant to the crime passed away.

Trial was set to begin Tuesday morning against Marcelo Ramos Ortiz, but prosecutors sought the dismissal after the court learned the witness had died of a heart attack.

Ortiz was charged in 2007 with the crime after a large amount of cocaine was thrown from a vehicle in Guntersville. He still faces another trafficking methamphetamine charge.
