200 furloughed at Toledo Express Airport base due to federal shutdown

Posted: Updated:
SWANTON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

About 200 people were told not to show up to work on Tuesday at the Ohio Air National Guard base at Toledo Express Airport. The workers are employees of the federal government, furloughed by the federal government shutdown.

Congress failed to pass a resolution to fund the government by midnight Monday, when a previous spending bill expired. The republican controlled House of Representatives passed a spending measure that funded most of the federal government, but cut funding for the Affordable Care Act. The democratically controlled senate rejected that measure, and passed a continuing resolution which funded the entire government.

Major Gary Bentley with the 180th Fighter Wing says about 200 civilian staff, who do everything from aircraft maintenance to paycheck processing at the base, have been furloughed.

Major Bentley says all training flights for the 180th have been suspended, but that the base will still handle any alerts that are posted.
