Lauderdale Co. schools add another resource officer

LAUDERDALE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

The Lauderdale County commissioners have agreed to split costs with the Lauderdale County School Board to hire an additional school resource officer.

The sheriff's department is expected to post the opening on Tuesday.

The additional SRO makes a total of three officers which will be assigned to the 11 county schools.

School board officials say they will split the district into three sections - an eastern, middle and western section, assigning one officer to each.

The added manpower will cut emergency response times and help build extra security within the district.

"When we began the school year last year, we only had one SRO officer, and in theory if he was in one end of the county and had to respond to the other, that's about a 75 mile distance he had to go to get from one end to the other," said Student Safety Supervisor John Mansell. "Now we're cutting our response time to less than 20 minutes between schools at any distance and now we'll have three SRO's."

School board officials say they will continue to add as many SRO's to the district as they can. They say you can never be too safe when it comes to protecting schools.
