TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) -

Tuscaloosa police make a new effort to reach out to the community.

They hosted Coffee with a Cop this morning at Belle Foods on McFarland Boulevard next to University Mall.

It gives them a chance to interact with the public in a setting quiet setting over a cup of coffee. They say it also gives folks in the community a chance to meet them and get to know them by name.

Police talked about the job they're doing in the community and the officers want people to tell them what's happening in their neighborhood.

"If there's a problem or an issue in their community, in their neighborhood, that's what we're here for. We want to break down those barriers. They would normally see us out in a emergency situation where we may not be as approachable as we will be at an opportunity like this," Sgt. Darren Beams said.

They answered questions about old laws and new ones like the state's new gun laws. Coffee With a Cop has been held in other states and the Tuscaloosa PD hopes it will benefit them. They hope to make it an annual event.
