Ohio braces for potential government shutdown

Ohio is bracing for the potential consequences of a looming government shutdown, from workers who live paycheck to paycheck to program directors worried about further impacts for already dwindling services for low-income clients.

A government shutdown would begin at midnight Tuesday unless feuding Republican and Democratic lawmakers in Washington make a deal on a spending bill. As in other states, that would signal the closing of national parks, delays in government-backed mortgages and furloughs at military bases.

Other government services, such as mail delivery and Social Security benefits, would remain in tact.

Impacts on other programs aren't yet known and largely would depend on how long a potential shutdown would last.

Associated Press writers Julie Carr-Smyth in Columbus, Ohio, and Lisa Cornwell in Cincinnati contributed to this report.
