Proposed entertainment district could boost Providence business

Businesses report slower foot traffic over the last year. Businesses report slower foot traffic over the last year.

A new entertainment district may soon be opening in Huntsville. City leaders proposed adding one to the Village of Providence. Businesses give the plan the green light for the simple reason that they believe it will bring in more money on those all-important game day weekends.

Huntsville city councilman Will Culver introduced the ordinance at this week's meeting. He said the plan mirrors that of the two downtown entertainment districts, with the exception of the hours of operation. Under the proposed ordinance, the district would open from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Culver said Providence won't need as many police officers, if any, to monitor attendees during the entertainment district's hours. He said that is due to the smaller area involved.

Restaurant owners seem to like the idea, saying they hope it will bring new customers and new revenue. Several businesses reported declining foot traffic over the past year, and hope this plan will revive the area.

Michaal Williams, assistant general manager of The Brick House Sports Café, said it has been very quiet recently. "It's football season and we don't have the business that we had last year. That has to do with a lot of the complaints, as far as noise from the bands. We quit doing that, and a lot of people have gone elsewhere," Williams said.

As a kid-friendly destination, Williams said he could understand the concern of parents about open containers of alcohol, like are allowed in other entertainment districts. But he said that the plan is perfect for his type of business, which offers live music and drink specials.

City council members are set to vote on the issue at their meeting next week.
