WEST BLOCTON, AL (WBRC) -

A West Blocton Middle School student is turning heads as one of the newest marching band members.

The town of West Blocton shuts down come homecoming. The streets turn into a festival with West Blocton High School Marching Band filling the streets with music.

This is Liam White's first year marching with the band.

"I just thought it would be fun to do," said Liam.

He practices with the band and keeps in step. The only thing separating him from the rest of the group is his "ghost" or guide who directs him where to go.

Liam has been blind since birth.

"I have had people that say the person that leads me around they thing that he's the blind kid. They think I'm the one guiding the blind kid," said Liam.

His guide is with him every step of the way. He puts his hand on Liam's shoulder and gently glides him with the rest of the members. It comes naturally to Liam now but he did face challenges in the very beginning.

"Being out on the field those first few weeks, having to learn all those steps and everything. That was not fun," Liam said.

"We've never treated him any differently so when he said he wanted to do it I said, 'OK,'" Gloria, Liam's mother, said.

Gloria says she and her husband, Keith, have always supported their son in his endeavors. His choice to march in the band wasn't any different.

"Right now he is getting all the social skills. He is learning to get around by himself, to follow directions from other people. Because we won't always be there," Gloria said.

Liam may not be able read music the way others do or march by himself but he's determined to not let his disability get in the way of his passion.

"If I can do it then there's nothing that can hold anyone else back," said Liam.

Liam already has plans to attend the University of Alabama and march in the Million Dollar Band.
