Arsenal braces for impact of possible shutdown

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

All eyes at Redstone Arsenal were on the Pentagon Friday, where Robert Hale, Under Secretary of Defense, held a press conference detailing the Department of Defense's plan for a possible government shutdown.

"If DOD's appropriations lapse, we can only conduct limited activities specifically authorized by law," said Hale.

Those excepted activities include the support of specific military operations and emergency services. Hale said the lapse in funds would mean furloughs for civilian employees not a part of those operations.

"Civilian workers who do not primarily support these excepted activities would be placed in a non-duty, non-pay status on an emergency no-notice basis," Hale said.

At Redstone Arsenal, there are some 37,000 employees. Of those, about 20,000 are civilian and 16,000 are contractors who could be affected by the furloughs.

As those folks stand by to see what will happen, leaders across the Arsenal are preparing to implement a shutdown. Over at Aviation and Missile Command, about 95 percent of the workforce is civilian.

"We are going through a very deliberate planning process and the war fighter is our number one concern. We want to make sure we maintain the best support possible for those soldiers who are out there in harm's way," said Colonel Jay Macklin, AMCOM Chief of Staff.

Military members will not be furloughed, and support for key military operations will continue. But a government shutdown followed by furloughs will disrupt many support activities such as training, maintenance, and new contracts.
