GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Two people went to jail Friday morning after an argument between family members at a killer's sentencing.

J.C. Franklin Samuels Jr and Christopher Lafferty were arrested for harassment after they allegedly phoned another family member at the sentencing and threatened them. They are both out on $1,000 bond.

Just after 11 a.m. Friday, a judge sentenced J.C. Samuels to 45 years, or 540 months, in prison.

Samuels was charged in the 2009 murder of his son, Greg Samuels, who died from a single 22-caliber gunshot wound to the chest in the front yard of their Robert Circle home in Guntersville.

Prosecutors argued for a long sentence because he got his rifle and lay in wait for the younger Samuels to get home.

The defense argued for a shorter sentence because he was older, in bad health, and had no significant criminal history.

Some family members are upset with the long sentence.

"My father is an innocent man. Greg deserves everything that he got. He was the menace to society. He killed animals, he beat people up, threatened to break my face in. I'm thankful to my father for what he did," said daughter Jessica Moree.

The victim's sister said she remembered Samuels as a violent man who deserves the 45-year sentence.

"To see him finally be held accountable for something that he did and know that he's not going to bond out in a week... It's the first day of the rest of our lives," said Jennifer Fisher.

J.C. Samuels called his sentence unjust as he was led to the county jail after Friday morning's hearing.

Defense attorney Mike Mastin said they will be filing an immediate appeal.
