Funeral homes sponsor suicide prevention event

Posted: Updated:

A Valley group is going above and beyond to raise awareness and get us to talk about the uncomfortable subject of suicide.

"The big pink elephant in the corner of the room, it's there, but nobody wants to talk about it because there's a stigma attached," said Jayson Davis.

He's on a mission to get people to talk about the taboo subject.

"Statistics show that 4 out of 5 people who have successfully carried out suicide have given clear warning signs, so that shows us that it's clearly preventable," he said.

His group MADSAM, an acronym for 'Making a Difference Suicide Awareness Movement,' is trying to make a difference by spreading awareness about depression and suicide.

On Oct. 5, the group is having a Suicide Awareness Unity Walk at Winchester Park, in Winchester TN, and the group has an unlikely sponsor.

Two funeral homes, Higgins and Moore-Cortner Funeral Home are sponsoring the walk.

"We witness what happens first hand after the devastation and how it impacts the families," said Clay Higgins with Higgins Funeral Home.

He said, "The community is everything. If the community is healthy we all move in the same direction, in the right direction."
