JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

Attorneys for Jefferson County were in federal court Thursday making a case for limiting the power and cost of a court appointed receiver to oversee the hiring and firing of employees.

Attorneys for plaintiffs in the case told U.S. District Judge Lynwood Smith the receiver should have broad powers and should not be limited by the county's bankruptcy or having to ask commissioners for funding. "We've had some productive conservations. I think the opposing council as well as the judge understands we are in bankruptcy. Cash is an issue." David Carrington, Jefferson Co. Commission President said.

The county's attorneys have recommended giving the receiver a salary of $240,000 which is the same as county manager Tony Petelos. Smioth who will appoint the receiver told both sides "he doesn't believe the receiver will run amok." When it comes to their authority or expenses. Jefferson Co. Commissioner say they just hope the receiver will be on board soon.

"We need a receiver in place so we can hire more people in our roads and transportation department. We have roads that need to be fixed. We need to get some people on board," Sandra Little Brown, Jefferson Co. Commissioner said.

Despite the concerns about the potential cost all of the commissioners including County Manager Tony Petelos are vowing to work with whoever is appointed.

"I'm looking forward to working with the receiver. The receiver will be in charge of hiring and how we do this and try to bring some folks back to work," Petelos said.

Jefferson Co. has submitted a list of candidates that include local attorneys and one professor who served as receiver over the Jefferson Co. Personnel Board earlier.
