The investigation continued Thursday into what caused a fatal wreck on I-565 Wednesday afternoon. 66-year-old Frederick Bender of Hoover and 26-year-old Marissa Baugher of Athens were killed, along with her unborn baby. She was two weeks from her due date.

Witnesses told police Bender swerved into the eastbound lanes and hit Baugher head-on.

"She cracked jokes all day long and made you laugh," said Baugher's friend, Meagan Reeves.

"She had this gentle spirit that just kind of radiated and drew you in," said The Brook church pastor, Brian Mayfield.

Each friend shared a different memory. Each memory has common theme -- A kind-hearted mother of a two year-old girl, with a baby boy on the way.

"Her spirit and the way she talked to people, and the way she loved on them authentically," said Reeves.

Baugher and her baby were taken to the hospital after the crash, where friends say she fought hard to hang on.

"It seemed like an eternity waiting on them to come out and tell him anything," said Mayfield.

But when doctors did come out, the news was not what they wanted.

"(The doctors said) we're keeping her alive, keeping her heart beating, but it's only because we've got the machine on," said Mayfield.

Friends say their focus then turned to Baugher's husband, Matthew, who is now a single dad.

"The number one thing we desire to do for Matthew, or anyone facing something like this, is to just be there," said Mayfield.

Be there, just like the tattoo on his arm that reads, Micah. It's the name of his son that he never got to meet.

"Having a tattoo on his arm, that is something, I don't think he will regret that decision," said Reeves. "That's just another way for him to honor his son."

Baugher was a church leader at The Brook in Madison and a grief counselor.
