BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

There's more talk today about what to do with aging, but extremely busy bridge on I-20/59.

ALDOT wants to rebuild the bridge in front of the BJCC and eliminate some of the exits. What does Birmingham Mayor William Bell think about the idea?

ALDOT Director John Cooper and the mayor met today as we're told they do the last Thursday of each month. But today, the focus was on the bridge you see behind me how best to repair 6,600 feet of I-20/59 that runs through the heart of downtown.

Yesterday, in a meeting with the media, Cooper presented feasibility studies ALDOT had done on options to bury the bridge, move it and repair it. Ultimately, Cooper says repairing the bridges would be the most efficient route.

After learning some of the information today, Bell said he was grateful for the input and felt ALDOT has addressed the majority of the city's concerns and those of the BJCC, because this project could have a major impact on that facility too.

However, bell said at this point, there is no final consensus on what parts of the proposal will or will not be approved.

Cooper says he'll meet with the mayor again in the next week or two to present more information.

But he says a final decision needs to be made soon. They'd like to get going on this project by next year, if possible.
