HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Huntsville Police have confirmed the identity of the woman found dead Thursday at a house on Oakdale Terrace as 71-year-old Emma Jean Carter.

Officers responded to the home for a missing persons call at 12:30 p.m. Thursday. An investigator found the woman's body in the backyard during a second visit to the home after following up on some information.

Investigators said later Thursday afternoon it was the body of the woman who was reported missing. Just before 10 p.m., police confirmed the body as Carter's.

"At this time we are still trying to determine the cause of death and what exactly occurred. We are still in the early stages of the investigation," said Lieutenant Randy Owens.
