HOOVER, AL (WBRC) -

Parts of I-65 South will be shut down for much of the weekend so ALDOT can fix a huge hole south of the I-459 interchange and north of Valleydale Road in the Hoover area.

ALDOT officials said they tried to temporarily address the problem so the road would be safe enough to last beyond football season, but they have realized they need to fix it now.

"We've tried to patch it to get it to the proper time. The patch keeps coming. And we're going to get somebody hurt out there," Brian Davis, and ALDOT division engineer, said.

"We can do this is in the week and disrupt all the a.m. and p.m. rush hour traffic into downtown or we can do it on the weekend with the proper announcement, telling people, 'I know this is going to be an inconvenience. But accept the fact we have no choice to make this in fear of getting someone hurt if we don't,'" Davis added.

The section of the interstate that will be partially closed usually contains four lanes of traffic.

Starting Friday night through early Sunday morning, road crews will restrict traffic. It will go down to two lanes of traffic then three lanes later in the day.

The road work won't affect fans as they head to the Alabama game, but it may cause a delay on the way home as things back up on I-65. It could also slow traffic on I-459, and I-59 so drivers should be aware of possible delays.

Officials suggest taking Highway 31 as a detour.
