GED program funding cut, computers pulled from area non-profit

After more than a year of support from Chattahoochee Valley Community College, a GED program in Phenix City aimed at mentoring young people, will see some changes as support is pulled from the school.

T.E.A.R.S. Inc., a non-profit organization, will lose nearly a dozen instructional computers in their classroom. Eula Slayton, a program director for the organization, says they were told the money just isn't there.

"If you are getting anytime of assistance from the government, whether it be state or federal government, everybody is making cut backs. So I don't doubt that they may be making cutbacks and are losing funding, however if that is what is happening with our program or not I don't really know that," Slayton.

It's a major blow to this non-profit program that helps "at risk" teens across the Valley. The group recently took several young people from the program on a bus ride to Washington D.C. to experience the 50th anniversary of the famous March on Washington.

Organizers say this funding cut by CVCC will limit their ability to help these young people better their lives. CVCC confirmed to News Leader 9 that they are cutting the program and removing a dozen computers that are used for their joint GED prep program but said students will be allowed to come to their campus for GED prep classes.

Slayton says that without the computers things will move a lot slower for the students and they may even have to resort back to using textbook materials.

"Before we partnered with CVCC we were doing it. And it was without a lot of computers, we did have one computer program, it made it easier for the children because they are computer-based now and they like to do things on the computer."

More than a dozen computers will be given to the T.E.A.R.S. G.E.D. program to help keep the preparatory program alive.
