BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

As a bartender at Oasis, Jessie Haldinan has seen Lakeview's popularity grow. After the passing of the open container ordinance by the Birmingham City Council on Tuesday, she's excited to see what comes next.

"Look at what it's done for New Orleans and Beale Street. Maybe the same thing could happen here, which would be awesome," said Haldinan.

Councilman Jonathan Austin says there's work to be done before anything like that happens.

"The next step is for a group like the Civic Center, or Uptown, or whoever the group is, to come to the council with a plan for operating the entertainment zone within the confines of the law that we passed," said Austin.

Marina von Bismarck is with The Rare Martini. She hopes the new districts will strengthen relationships between merchants.

"I think it will actually bring a lot of local businesses together in Birmingham being able to collaborate and work together on this," said von Bismarck.

But with the new districts comes some concern. One of those is underage drinking.

"If you're not old enough to get in somebody else that is goes in and gets you a drink and hands it to you out on the sidewalk," said Haldinan.

Councilman Austin said designated areas will have more patrols to look out for those type situations.

The city is allowing up to five districts to participate in the open container law.

Austin expects to see applications start to come in within the next couple of weeks.
