Details emerge about AL options on healthcare exchange

Posted: Updated:
MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

There is finally some information available in regards to one of the key parts of President Barack Obama's signature healthcare reform law. An idea of what some of the plans will look like for Alabamians who currently don't have coverage became clearer Wednesday.

Supporters say the plans are affordable while opponents say the marketplace will wreak havoc on the state and country's healthcare economies.

We now know that there are at least seven different plans consumers will get to choose from, but Alabama's insurance plans are few in number compared to most states.

More than three years after the president signed the federal healthcare law, the details are emerging on what kinds of plans the uninsured could purchase.

Just days before the exchange goes online, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in Washington unveiled the information Wednesday morning. The cheapest plan for a 27-year-old who makes $27,000 per year will cost $98 with tax credits. The cheapest plan for a family of four with a $50,000 income is $112 per month.

On average, Alabamians will have access to seven plans, based on age and where they live, but that's far below the national average of 52 plans available in other states.

Overall though, healthcare law supporters say the new information is great news for consumers.

This information is going to relieve a lot of concerns," says Jim Carnes of Alabama ARISE. "It's going to dispel the naysayers who are saying this is going to be unaffordable and will break the bank. These plans are going to be affordable and people are going to buy them."

The new law allows young adults to stay on their parents' health plans until age 26, and the law assumes that older Americans without private plans will be covered by Medicaid and Medicare.
