HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

In the very near future, the Walmart at the corner of Drake Avenue and Memorial Parkway will have a new location next to Parkway Place mall as a Walmart Supercenter. Wednesday afternoon officials with Walmart, the city of Huntsville, and representatives with the Mid Town Huntsville association met behind closed doors to discuss what happens next.

"We wanted to come together, we wanted to talk to leadership with the neighborhood organizations that are impacted by the store and talk to them about the facts and what the realities are," said Glen Wilkins. He's the Public Affairs and Government Relations liaison with Walmart.

One reality that people who will live near the Supercenter worry about is the traffic and how it might impact the area once the store opens.

Councilman Bill Kling is against the new addition.

"It's going to be going into about 13 acres of land and it's going to butt right up to the neighborhood," he said. "The location I think is bad as far as cars being able to get in and out from the parkway, L&N drive, Drake Avenue. They are not set up for something like this."

It's a concern that Wilkins said has been handled.

"One of the things that we talked about was traffic," he said.  "Obviously that was a question and one that we were able to answer. We have some very good studies that were able to show the impacts it will have on the community. We feel that it has been mitigated."

"We want our customers to have easy access into the store. We want it to be safe. We have a strong interest in making sure that traffic flows smoothly and it's convenient for customers to shop with us. We work closely with communities to ensure that visiting our store is as easy as possible. There will be truck access off of the L&N road, and ALDOT has approved the access point," Wilkins continued.

Wilkins said people have been asking for a Supercenter in the area for years. The new 150,000 square foot store will employ more than 80 people.

Construction on the Supercenter is set to begin this December, with plans to open 10-12 months after that.
