Jackson Co. school library gets thousand-book makeover

More than 30 Books-A-Million district managers from across the United States made a special trip to Rosalie School in Jackson County Wednesday. There, they surprised librarian Amy Shankles, who had originally requested a $200 grant to buy books for her shelves.

$200 might have bought ten books, so the company decided they would make Shankles' dreams come true by sending her 1,000 books.

Company officials wanted to surprise the librarian after they found out she had made the $200 request on a school grant website. What Shankles didn't know was that more than 30 district managers would be giving her library a full makeover.

Within an hour of their arrival, there were new computer monitors, e-readers, furniture, and masses of books for the library.

While thanking Books-A-Million for their generous gifts, Shankles unveiled a new reading initiative and said the library's new materials will help it be a success.

"They already love to read, but I know that their excitement for reading is just going to be out of the roof," she said.

Seventh grader Kaitlyn Lofty agreed with her librarian, but said she only has so much time to enjoy all the new books because she will be graduating to high school at the end of this school year.

The school also received a $500 gift certificate, and every child went home with a brand-new book.
