HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - Emergency workers, already on the scene of an earlier accident on I-565 earlier on Wednesday, responded to another serious accident a few miles away.
Rescue workers were called around 7:30 p.m. to I-565 near Mile Marker 1, a few hundred yards east of I-65.
Officials said the wreck was a chain-reaction that began as stop-and-go traffic continued in the eastbound lanes of the interstate following a fatal wreck that occured at the Mooresville intersection Wednesday afternoon.
Police said a pickup moving at high speed rear-ended a Range Rover, which rear-ended a Prius, which in turn bumped into a trailer pulled by another pickup.
The driver of the Range Rover was unconscious at the scene. He was airlifted to Huntsville Hospital in critical condition.
Two people were seriously injured and taken to the hospital as well. The woman driving the Prius was not seriously injured.
All lanes of traffic were closed as emergency crews made their way to the scene. By 9 p.m., two lanes of traffic were still blocked as wreckers were en route.
