FALKVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A recent house fire in Morgan County has some leaders considering a new law against large snakes.

The debate is happening in Falkville. Back in August, a home caught fire, and investigators soon discovered the house was full of pythons.

Residents became concerned, saying the reptiles could have escaped into a nearby school or nursing home. The mayor said he asked the city attorney to look into it, and discovered an ordinance in Madison they hope to modify and use in their town, banning large snakes.

"They claim they're not dangerous, but we have had reports of people and children being swallowed and killed by these ‘non-dangerous' snakes, so the ordinance is to ban snakes altogether in the town," said Mayor Bob Ramey.

The mayor said the ordinance should be ready for review by the Oct. 29 work session. He also said the home that caught fire was apparently being used as an unlicensed snake shop.
