DEKALB COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Good news for students in DeKalb County… a school resource officer will be stationed in every high school this year.

With tight budgets, Sheriff Jimmy Harris said he is able to utilize retired law enforcement officers for much less than it would cost to pull someone off the road.

Sheriff Harris thanked the county commission for their role in helping to fund a total of nine school resource officers who were present at the meeting Tuesday morning.

Harris said when he first took office he had three SRO's, then he had five last year, and now they have enough to send an SRO into each of the county's high schools.

Sheriff Harris said SRO's help act as a deterrent to criminal behavior as well as being on the front line in case of a school shooting incident. Though it's that day to day interaction the sheriff says is so valuable.

"That's where they're a great asset, not only at the school but outside the school.  We've made a lot of different raids, meth lab, stolen goods off of tips that kids have given us at school," said Sheriff Harris.

The sheriff said they still have to rotate SRO's to watch over the middle schools but hopes time and money will eventually get them covered as well.
