DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) -

A Dothan Police Department School Resource Officer who was convicted of having sex with a student was sentenced to 10 years in prison Monday.

Lanice Bonds, 37, confessed to the accusations and pleaded guilty in June. He asked the judge to sentence him to probation, but his request was refused.

The investigation started on September 17, 2013 when the Dothan City Schools forwarded a complaint to the Dothan Police Department regarding a complaint of an inappropriate relationship between the officer and a high school student.

Bond, who had been stationed at the school for more than six years, allegedly had sex with the student in 2012, though it took more than a year before an investigation was started and the man was arrested and charged with "School employee engaging in a sex act with a student under the age of 19".

The case was forwarded to the Dothan Police Department's Internal Affairs division where investigators began questioning Bonds. He subsequently confessed, according to officials.

In addition to prison, Bonds was ordered to pay a $2,500 fine as well as $1,000 to a victim's compensation assessment. The state has 30 days to file for any restitution.

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
