The Pell City Council approved a new contract that will keep the shelter's doors open.

Concerns that the shelter might close began because it's time to renew the contract between the city and the ASPCI. City leaders asked the shelter's board to be more transparent about how they operate and how they spend their money since they take in $100,000 a year from the city and county.

The shelter initially responded by saying they were a private entity and didn't have to respond to the mayor's request for financial records.

Now, the new contract drafted  by the city asks the ASPCI to hold open board meetings and to provide a report which would show what happens to every animal taken to the shelter.

ASPCI agreed to hold open quarterly board meetings beginning in October and the ASPCI says there is already a monthly report given to the Pell City Animal Control. This will also be given to city leaders.

The approved contract also means more money for the shelter. The ASPCI will now get $35,000 a year from the city.
