Teenager charged with robbing grandmother

LIMESTONE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Limestone County deputies arrested an 18-year-old Tennessee girl after they said she spent thousands of her sick grandmother's money on clothes, a hotel room, and videos for her boyfriend.

Investigators said the spending spree included a hotel suite in Florence for her boyfriend, clothing purchases, and bill payments.

Sheriff Mike Blakely said 18-year-old Marvina Austin got her grandmother to write checks totaling $11,000.

The sheriff's department said they were contacted after the grandmother's power of attorney called about the unauthorized checks.

Blakely said Austin is charged with first-degree theft by deception.

"This is something that we deal with quite frequently. Elderly people, especially those who may be suffering from dementia or Alzheimer's are easy prey sometimes and the people that you'd least expect are some of the family members that are taking advantage of the situation," said Blakely.

Austin is currently out on bond. The Limestone County Sheriff's Department said they are working on recovering some of the money.
