TDOT awards contract to repair I-40 bridge above Charlotte Ave.

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Road crews will soon get to work replacing concrete that keeps crumbling off of Interstate 40 in downtown Nashville.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation says it has awarded a $400,000 contract to fix the bridge over Charlotte Avenue.

Several times in the past few months, lanes of I-40 have been closed for emergency repairs after chunks of the interstate fell onto the road below.

This new contract calls for all the concrete to be replaced.

Both directions of I-40 will be closed for an entire weekend in either October or November for that work to happen. The exact dates have not been announced.

A larger effort to rehab four downtown bridges, including the Charlotte Avenue overpass, is planned for 2015.

"They need a lot of maintenance. They have a lot of potholes," said TDOT spokeswoman Deanna Lambert. "We're looking at rehabilitating those bridges in the downtown area."

The work is just a portion of the 86 projects TDOT has planned across the state, including the "Bridge over Broad," where Broad Street intersects with Old Fort Parkway at Memorial Boulevard in Murfreesboro.

Recent federal data show dozens of Tennessee bridges are among the thousands nationwide that have advanced deterioration or are at risk of collapsing.

A Transportation Department spokeswoman says at least 25 of those bridges in Tennessee have been replaced with new structures, repaired, or either under construction for replacement or repair.
