Pistol permit applications on the rise in Colbert County

COLBERT COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

It's been nearly two months since lawmakers lowered the age limit for those allowed to conceal and carry.

People in Alabama between the ages of 18 and 20 can apply for pistol permits but according to state law, they still have to wait until they're 21-years-old to purchase a gun.

Sheriff Ronnie May said his department processed 596 pistol permit applications in just the last month. He said over a third of them were for people between the ages of 18 and 20.

According to a document from the Colbert County Sheriff's Department, more than 30 states will not recognize Alabama's conceal carry permit for people under the age of 21. Which means if you're caught with a firearm under age in those states you could face serious consequences.

"There are many many states that don't recognize an 18 to 20-year-old with a conceal carry permit and they can be charged in those states for possession of a weapon if they're found with it," said Sheriff May.
