DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) -

The Dothan Police Department is releasing a statement confirming that an officer on the force has been fired.

Police Chief Gregory Benton said the officer, Captain Keith Gray, was terminated effective immediately after an extensive internal investigation.

Chief Benton would not discuss specific aspects of the termination but said the investigation started after an incident in August with a bike club where members were alleged to have beaten people with a pipe. The chief would not explain why the investigation into one of his officers then started.

The chief said the extent of Gray's violations "were intolerable offenses." It was determined that Captain Gray "violated Police Department General Orders and Personnel Rules and Regulations of the City of Dothan," the chief said in a statement. Beyond that, he said he could not comment any further because it is a personnel issue and is against city policy.

Gray has 10 days to appeal the decision.

Then-Lt. Gray made news headlines in December 2009 when he spoke out at the Dothan City Commission about the open police chief position. During that meeting he criticized the hiring process, alleging racial discrimination and claimed the job's qualifications were changed in the middle of the selection process. A subsequent investigation by the Dothan Equal Opportunity Office found that all regulations were followed
