First annual Race for Every Child on October 5th for Children's National Medical Center to feature 5K walk/run at Freedom Plaza as giant play area for DC-MD-VA families
WASHINGTON, Sept. 23, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- With more than 2,500 runners and walkers already registered and ready to go, Children's National Medical Center is in the final two-week push to reach its goal of signing up at least 3,000 people by October 3rd to participate in its first annual Race for Every Child on Saturday, October 5th at Freedom Plaza. The event will help fund specialized medical care, research into childhood diseases, and important wellness and preventive services to keep children healthy.
"We say that with this race, 'the finish line is just the beginning' because the funds raised from the event will have a lasting impact on the lives of so many children in need," said Sharon Kessler, director of the Race for Every Child.
From the first hospital admittance in 1870 to today, Children's National has been serving families from the DC-MD-VA community, across the country and internationally with world-class care. Consistently ranked among the top pediatric hospitals in the country, it is committed to ensuring that no child in need of medical care is turned away. Children's National – based in Washington, DC with several facilities in Maryland and Virginia – serves more than 270,000 children and provides approximately $50 million in uncompensated care every year.
Among those already signed up to run or walk in the race are families whose children's lives have been saved by the hospital. Committed to supporting Children's National, they have formed race teams to help drive pledges toward the final goal of raising $850,000 by the end of this year.
"Race for Every Child is about celebrating children's health and, more importantly, making sure that it stays front and center on the public's radar screen as an important priority," said Kessler.
A half-day event, Race for Every Child will feature a wide range of fun for the family, including:
