(CNN) – A senior Navy official told CNN it will take six to eight weeks to repair the damage at the Navy Yard in Washington, DC.

The Navy expects the FBI to turn building 197 back over to the military next week so work can begin.

On Monday, Aaron Alexis went on a shooting rampage there, killing 12 people.

Police shot and killed Alexis, and are not sure of his motive.

The Navy set up an alternate work area so it can continue to administer billions of dollars in shipbuilding and weapons contracts.
