Scottsboro superintendent made decision to cut trees near stadium

SCOTTSBORO, AL (WAFF) -

The superintendent of the Scottsboro school system gave the go-ahead to cut down trees along Broad Street, in front of the high school football stadium.

Dr. Judy Berry said she was approached by officials with the power board who expressed concerns about the trees. She said 10 of the nearly three dozen trees are diseased or rotten.

If the trees or branches fell, they could pull down the nearby power lines. Those lines supply power to the hospital and some of the schools, Berry said.

Some residents thought the trees were removed at the request of advertisers who paid for signs at the stadium.

However, Berry said the new advertising signs played no role in the decision to remove the trees.

The timing of the ad signs going up and the trees coming down is coincidental, she said.

And, Berry said, the decision was made by her and not the board.

"That's part of the day-to day operations of the school system and I gave them permission," she said. "But I know that I have at least two board members that, well three actually, that support that decision completely because that's the right thing to do.

"There was no other consideration except keeping that power on and taking care of the people."

Berry did say there are plans to help beautify the area once again.
