LIMESTONE, AL (WAFF) -

Limestone County Schools held active shooter training at Clements High School Thursday evening, with exercises including real weapons and paint-tipped bullets.

The district wanted the experience to be as realistic as possible. Two sheriff's deputies acted as school shooters as school resource officers and administrators cleared the school.

The ammunition used in the scenario, while not lethal, does hurt and leave marks if hit by it.

Superintendent Dr. Tom Sisk said the district has never had to encounter a school shooter, but he wants his staff prepared. He and his staff participated in the active shooter drill. Sisk said Limestone Co. Schools was the first county system in the state to have SRO's at every school.

The district said they have planned the training exercise for months, and point to the mass shooting at a Washington DC Navy yard as more reason to have it.

"It reaffirms that we have to be prepared every day, that we have to take the precautions and do what a reasonable person expects you to do to ensure the safety of our children," said Sisk.
