Redstone Arsenal joins fight against texting and driving

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Redstone Arsenal has joined the fight against texting and driving.

As part of the nationwide "It Can Wait" campaign, the arsenal observed "Drive 4 Pledges Day" Thursday to remind employees and visitors to the post not to text and drive. There has been a ban on driving and using a handheld cell-phone on the arsenal for several years.

Meanwhile, state troopers said there have been 258 citations written statewide for driving while distracted by an electronic device. The figures are as of August.

Data from the last three years suggest a rising trend.

The number of crashes blamed on distracted driving rose from 931 to 1,005 from 2010 to last year. The number of fatalities went from 3 in 2010 to 8 in 2011 and 10 last year and the number of injuries climbed from 315 to 362.
