EUFAULA, AL (WTVM) -

A Eufaula man has been arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse.

Cornelius Jerrell Jenkins, 25, was arrested September 17 by Lieutenant David Morris and Deputy Aaron Grubbs with the Barbour County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff LeRoy Upshaw stated that the Barbour County Sheriff's Office was contacted by Flower's Hospital in Dothan, Ala. in reference to a 3-year-old child who had been brought into the emergency room with head and internal injuries in addition to broken bones. The child's mother told hospital personnel that the child had fallen off of her bed.

The child was then airlifted to the Children's Hospital in Birmingham, Ala. and placed in a critical care unit.

Lt. Morris, Investigator with the Sheriff's Office and the Alabama Department of Human Resources began investigating the case with Assistant District Attorney Terri Hall from Barbour County District Attorney Ben Reeves' Office.

Lt. Morris stated the child was released from the hospital on September 10 and was interviewed at Russell County Child Advocacy Center on September 13.

The child disclosed that Jenkins, who is the mother's boyfriend, had hurt her and caused her injuries. Lt. Morris stated that all of the children were taken out of the home by DHR and placed with either relatives or foster care.

Jenkins is currently being held in the Henry County Jail for safety reasons. His bond was set at $50,000 and a condition of his bond is that he has no contact with any children.
