SHELBY COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

Judging from the crowd at the Shelby County fair on Wednesday night, it was clear the threat of a possible shooting there this weekend doesn't have people staying at home.

Mellisa Roberts didn't attend the fair Wednesday night, but she's planning to come on Friday with her son.

"It kind of concerns me a little, but when you consider the source, it's Facebook," said Roberts.

Wednesday's sights and sounds at the fair weren't any different than they were last year. Children are still winning prizes, the rides are in full swing and of course the vendors are ready to entertain. It's business as usual.

"Right now it is an unsubstantiated tip of a threat so we really don't know if there's more to it," Captain Ken Birchfield with the Shelby County Sheriffs Office said.

But the sheriff's office didn't want to take a chance, which is why they informed the public about the anonymous tip on their Facebook page.

That warning says in part:

"The Shelby County Sheriff's Office has received numerous notifications alerting us to a potential problem that is going to occur at the fair in Columbiana.  We are aware of the rumored threat of violence, and at this time the rumors have not been substantiated.  However, in an abundance of caution, Shelby County Sheriff's Office investigators are taking every action to verify the validity of the threats and locate potential participants."

"I don't think anyone is really going to go in there and shoot it up. There are obviously police there so if they go they're going to get arrested. They can't be that dumb," said John Waller, a senior at Shelby County High School.

"I think most people know the fair, it's the same people that run it year after year. Security has always been great," said Roberts.

This weekend there are two fairs in Shelby County, one in Columbiana and the other in Alabaster. The sheriffs office will need up security at both.
