Compromise reached over highway memorial site

GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Family members and friends gathered for a candlelight vigil Wednesday night off Highway 69 in Guntersville. They met at the spot where four young people died in a car crash 13 years ago. For years, crosses had marked the spot where the crashed happened, but they were removed Monday by state workers after a woman who lives near them complained.

Several family members came together on Wednesday to remember the lives of Jonah Ray, Jeremy Calhoun, Andrew Marion and Deidra Brothers. The vigil was held on the state right-of-way that was marked by transportation officials on Wednesday. Family members said one of the victims of the crash, Andrew Marion, would have turned 32 years old Wednesday.  They said they were hurt when they found out the crosses were removed and that their purpose wasn't to hurt anyone. They said they just wanted to honor their family and bring awareness to the fact that life is short.

"This is why it's so special to us because it marks where they passed," said Mary Jane Latham, Andrew's mother. "And yes, there are tombstones and we do have those to grieve at also and to remember them, but this is special because of that."

Family members later reported that a compromise was reached between them and the woman who initially complained, Ruth White. They said one of White's family members came out during the vigil and told them she will let the crosses remain.
