Madison Animal Rescue Foundation sued in bill dispute

MADISON, AL (WAFF) -

A non-profit animal rescue is being sued for nearly $20,000 in unpaid vet bills. Companion Animal Care of Madison filed the lawsuit against Madison Animal Rescue Foundation (MARF).

Companion Animal Care said they provided services to MARF at extremely discounted prices. After more than a year of providing services, the owner said payments started lagging, then stopped coming at all.

"The payments quit coming," said Companion Animal Care Vet David Alford. "And emails and face-to-face meetings didn't solve anything."

Alford says he was left no option but to file a lawsuit against MARF for breach of contract. It states the non-profit owes Companion Animal Care nearly $20,000, plus interest, costs and attorneys' fees.

"I stretched monetarily as much as I could," said Alford. "Probably the most disheartening thing was simply never hearing back from them, never having an explanation." 

Thursday evening, WAFF received a statement from MARF. It says in part:

"After only a preliminary review of the records, it is apparent that Companion Animal Care's claim is significantly overstated. This discrepancy revealed the need for a more thorough examination of the records and raised the possibility that MARF may have overpaid for services by Companion Animal Care."
