Corn harvest could be a record in the state

Posted: Updated:

Farmers across the state are fueling up their combines, cotton pickers and peanut diggers with hopes of a bountiful harvest.

The USDA's "August Crop Production Report" predicts Alabama corn yields could set a state record of 145 bushels an acre. According to farmers' reports, about 26 percent of the state's corn crop is harvested.

Farmers are also optimistic about soybean and cotton harvests, thanks to ample summer rainfall. Coming off a record harvest in 2012, peanut farmers expect lower production for 2013 because fewer acres were planted.
