Redstone Arsenal security standards worry delivery driver

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Security clearance measures have been a big subject since Monday's shooting at the Washington Navy Yard.

The tragedy has even led officials at Redstone Arsenal to take a closer look at their procedures.

But one person who visits the Army post on a regular basis says what they have now is not enough. He says because once he gets on the base with his visitors badge, he's pretty much left to roam.

Now, he's there to do a job so he keeps it professional but he says the security measures he's come across - or lack thereof  - need some work.

"What happened in dc it can happen anywhere," he said.

He agreed to let us air his voice, but asked that we not show his face. But he makes daily deliveries to Redstone Arsenal.

"There are a few buildings on the arsenal that I deliver to that require extra security," he said. "You have to use a badge to actually get into the doors."

But this man says the company he works for doesn't have those badges, so …

"Basically, we just have to follow someone who goes in to the door, " he said. "We come right behind them and I ask them to hold the door."

It's a routine that worries this worker.

"It kind of disturbs me a bit because if someone like me, it's so easy for me to get into these supposedly secure buildings, someone who is not stable could do the same thing," he said.

Arsenal leaders say the safety and security of everyone on the arsenal is a top priority.  But this guy hopes the D.C. tragedy prompts change.

"I've been delivering for quite some time on the arsenal and I have never yet shown any extra (identification), I get on there with a visitors badge and that's it," he said.
