New charges for stepmom arrested for allegedly running girl to death

ETOWAH COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

An Etowah County woman charged in her stepdaughter's death faces new charges.

Jessica Hardin, who police say ran her 9-year-old stepdaughter to death for eating a candy bar, has been charged with harassment.

However, her case was removed from the Crossville Municipal Court docket Tuesday at the request of her attorney. The judge approved a stay in prosecution, basically halting the case because of her pending murder charges.

In 2012, Savannah Hardin collapsed and died after being made to run for about three hours as punishment for telling a lie about eating the candy.

The girl's grandmother, Joyce Hardin Garrard, is accused of forcing her to run. She is charged with capital murder and is jailed without bond.
